Academy of Program / Project & Engineering Leadership

Research and Advanced Concepts

The Academy of Program / Project & Engineering Leadership supports NASA's goal to bridge programs/projects and the academic community. Many partnerships, studies, research and workshops are planned to share knowledge between program/project practitioners and university researchers.

Research & Advanced Concepts The cornerstone for Applied Research is the Center for Program/Project Management Research (CPMR) which was formed by a partnership between NASA/APPEL and the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) to engage universities in world-class research that addresses internationally significant problems in the discipline of Project Management - with particular emphasis on the Nation's aeronautics and space program.

The intent is for CPMR to promote cutting-edge research, foster greater collaboration, disseminate information, encourage and develop student councils, and generally serve as a resource for program/project management knowledge. CPMR will facilitate training, workshops, and developmental opportunities, providing an environment to openly pursue innovative concepts. In addition, university grants and CPMR fellowships are instrumental in conducting the research and sharing the knowledge between university researchers and NASA project managers. A more recent Goal of the collaboration between NASA/APPEL and USRA/CPMR in this area is to facilitate university involvement in the new Professional Development for Technical Excellence (PDTE) initiative, which is seen as critical to the successful execution of the Vision for Space Exploration.

CPMR Objectives:

  • Exercise leadership to significantly advance the state of knowledge of program and project management
  • Develop a cadre of professionals to conduct world-class research and serve as a major resource for project management knowledge
  • Improve collaboration and data exchange between project management professionals
  • Facilitate hands-on project management training and developmental opportunities
  • Provide an atmosphere for open examination of innovative project management concepts, and
  • Stimulate, enable, and facilitate the direct application of CPMR research projects to real NASA program and project management situations

CPMR is guided by the leadership of:

  • Dr. Edward Hoffman, Director of NASA APPEL
  • Mr. Roger Forsgren, COTOR
  • Mr. Lewis Peach, USRA Chief Engineer and CPMR Director
  • Mr. David Holdridge, USRA, CPSS Program Manager and CPMR Associate Director
